What Is Tiled Roofing? What Are Its Advantages & Disadvantages?

Have a question or need to schedule a free estimate?

Tiles have been used since antiquity to cover the roofs of dwellings. Even today, this type of roof is one of the most common in the world. A tiled roof is also ecological because it is made of natural materials. Without forgetting its aesthetics, much appreciated.

The different tiled roofs

The tiles come in different materials, each with their particularity. We are talking about terracotta tiles, the most used and the most environmentally friendly. But be aware that the tiles can also be concrete, PVC, fiber cement, and even wood.

The roof in terracotta tiles

Terracotta is a material known since the dawn of time. Composed of clay and water, terracotta contains no polluting products. A terracotta tiled roof guarantees healthy air in the house. It is more resistant over time and its color does not change unlike other types of terracotta used to make tiles, which tend to darken over time.

Terracotta tiles are part of the family of flat tiles, which have the particularity of being able to be used to cover in particular very sloping roofs.

The concrete tile roof

Due to the properties of their material, concrete tiles, made from a mortar, provide a very tight seal to a roof. This material also requires almost no maintenance, except regular monitoring of the foam, which tends to develop more on this type of tiles than those in terracotta.

Concrete has the advantage of being able to be colored using pigments. Thus, it is possible to make tiles in many colors.

The advantages of a tiled roof

Whether they are terracotta or concrete, the tiles are rigid and resistant materials. If they are correctly and securely installed, they can in particular withstand very strong winds. Their lifespan is long, up to 30 years for terracotta tiles and 50 years for concrete ones. Properly maintained, a tiled roof can have a much longer lifespan.

Terracotta or concrete tiles also have the distinction of being very insulating, in particular thermally. They indeed have thermo-reflecting powers, which insulate well from the cold, like heat. They are also insensitive to moisture.

Even if they are heavy, the tiles are easy to handle, which makes their replacement easier. It is indeed possible to change only a damaged tile.

The tiles are also particularly fire-resistant. This is why they are often used in regions where the risk of fire is high.

On the aesthetic side, the tile exists in many colors. Most often red, you can however opt for white, green, etc. tiles. These are generally the town planning rules in force in your municipality, which define the authorized colors. On the other hand, the tiles can be offered in many forms, up to a hundred! The “canal tile” or the “purlin tile” for low-pitched roofs, or the “interlocking tile” or the “Roman tile” for intermediate slopes.

Finally, made of natural materials, the tiles are environment-friendly, as they are made locally and using 100% recyclable materials. It is also possible today to cover the roof with photovoltaic tiles, which allow users to produce electricity thanks to the radiation of the sun.

The disadvantages of a tiled roof

The main drawback of a terracotta-tiled roof is its maintenance. Its weight, relatively large, also requires it to prepare well beforehand for its installation, and in particular to ensure that the frame is capable of supporting it.

On the other hand, given the large number of tiles needed to cover a roof (sometimes up to 100 per square meter), its cost can easily become high.

You should also know that the color of a concrete tiled roof tends to change and fade over time to reveal the original gray color of the concrete.
