About Fort Bragg NC

The Fort Bragg NC area not only includes the United States military base of the same name, with about 54,000 military personnel and a civilian population of just under 30,000 as of 2000. Fort Bragg itself is over 251 square miles, and was  named for Confederate General Braxton Bragg from North Carolina, who was famous for serving in the Mexican-American War. The military installation serves as the home for the US Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps, as well as the command headquarters for the U.S. Army 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne), the 75th Ranger Regiment, the U.S. Army Forces Command, and U.S. Army Reserve Command. The site includes the Womack Army Medical Center and two airfields: Simmons Army Airfield and Pope Field, home to the Air Force Combat Control School.

There’s a lot of things for visitors to do, both military related and just fun! Carvers Creek State Park is a great place to learn about the history and nature of the area while hiking beautiful trails, and nature lovers will also enjoy a trip to Long Valley FArm. There’s also plenty of military history to explore, such as the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial and Museum, the JFK Special Warfare Museum, and the beloved local statue Iron Mike, an airborne paratrooper, in a small park.
