About Fort Dunn NC
The largest city in Harnett County NC, the community of Dunn was originally known as “Lucknow” and renamed in 1873 after rail engineer Bennett Dunn, and then the town was officially incorporated in 1887. The town is located south of Raleigh, and it was originally a logging community with a turpentine distillery. Many of these early structures such as the Harnett County Training School, the Kenneth L. Howard House, the John A. McKay House and Manufacturing Company, and the John E. Wilson House are preserved and maintained as part of the Dunn Commercial Historic District as well as listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Then, as now, Dunn was considered a hub of commerce and transportation for nearby communities, as evidenced by the Dunn Area History Museum.
Today, Dunn North Carolina is a quaint community with a lot to offer both visitors and residents. There were 9,263 residents as of the 2010 US Census and an estimated population of 9,718 in 2018. In addition to the Dunn Area History Museum, there’s also the General William C Lee Airborne Museum, a military history museum that makes for a fun afternoon. The city has several parks, such as Tyler Park, a great place to have a picnic. The city is close to the Cape Fear River, as well as Rhodes Pond, where residents and visitors both can enjoy the great outdoors.
